In Type 2: Structure I was tasked with choosing an album I connect with and designing layouts using only the artist’s name, album name, tracklist and track lengths. The project opened up throughout the weeks, starting with only using a single typeface, incrementally opening up the constraints. Adding line, shape, color, and eventually using experimental type and incorporating image and texture. I chose “The Glow Part II” by Phil Elvrum of The Microphones for it’s haunting themes of loneliness and my personal resonation with that. This record is famous for its creaky percussion, echoing horns, swaying melodies and vulnerable vocals. My goal was to create a visual narrative using type, proportion, scale, and structure that portrayed that emotional experience and expression.
